Planning to travel by Amtrak train in the U.S. this spring or summer? Interested in taking the Adirondack train from Montreal to New York City, the Maple Leaf train from Toronto to New York City, or trying any of Amtrak’s other routes?

The American passenger rail company has just announced a buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) deal on coach class tickets throughout its entire U.S. network. The sale is on from Thursday, February 13, until Monday, February 17, and you can travel between March 9 and August 30, 2020. Note that this sale applies only to coach fares (so not to business-class tickets), and it doesn’t apply to the auto train.

Here are just a few of the places you could hop off the train and go exploring.

Along the Adirondack route from Montreal to New York City, you could disembark in Plattsburgh (a pleasant holiday town in the Adirondacks); Saratoga Springs (a historic spa town known for horse racing); Albany (the New York state capital); or Rhinecliff (take a quick cab to picturesque nearby Rhinebeck, with its Gilded Age mansions).

And along the Maple Leaf train’s route from Toronto to New York City, you could stop in Niagara Falls, NY (no explanation needed!); Buffalo (see seven Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and go to the bar where buffalo wings were invented); Rochester (don’t miss the Strong Museum of Play or the George Eastman Museum); Syracuse (head to Dinosaur BBQ or the Erie Canal Museum); or Albany or Rhinecliff, as mentioned above.

Of course, you could take the Adirondack train from Montreal to Albany, then switch onto the Maple Leaf to head west to Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Niagara Falls. It’s a bit of a roundabout route, but do-able.

And once you’ve reached NYC, you can connect to Amtrak trains to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and points beyond. (You can get the Valentine’s Amtrak deal on those trains, too!)

You can get the two-for-one discount one of two ways. If you use Amtrak’s dedicated page for the Valentine’s Day BOGO sale, the discount will be applied automatically.

Alternatively, you can go to Amtrak’s main page and apply the promo code V214.

And if you’d like to travel to New York City by other means, don’t miss my post Five Ways to Get to New York City from Ottawa.
