New COVID restrictions in Ontario

Here are some of the main COVID-19 restrictions affecting leisure activities and local travel in Ontario from the Ontario government’s news conference this morning. All of the following (except for restrictions on schools) are in effect from 12:01am on Wednesday, January 5, through at least January 26, 2022. For full details, please see the Government of Ontario website.

  • Retailers are limited to 50 per cent capacity.
  • Indoor dining at restaurants is closed. Takeout, drive-through and delivery are allowed, as is outdoor dining (not that that’s much of an option in Ontario in January).
  • Gyms and indoor recreational facilities are closed. Outdoor recreation facilities remain open, with restrictions.
  • Indoor areas of concert venues, theatres, cinemas, museums, galleries, zoos, science centres, landmarks, historic sites and other attractions are closed. Some outdoor activities are permitted, with restrictions.
  • Casinos, bingo halls and other indoor gaming venues are closed.
  • Hair salons and barbers are limited to 50 per cent capacity.
  • Hotels and motels remain open, but shared facilities such as gyms are closed, and onsite restaurants are subject to the same restrictions as all other restaurants.
  • Short-term rentals are only open to those in need of housing. (As I read it, that means no leisure rentals, but I will work to verify this.)
  • Ice-fishing huts are permitted, with restrictions.
  • Libraries can open at 50 per cent capacity.
  • Ontario schools are closed for in-person instruction until at least January 17, 2022.
